Dear All Sifu's

Last few days,my FD2 creating a humming sound that can be heared from inside the car while driving (the sound came from the front left side)..My friend suggested that the front left wheel bearing damage). Sad Sad

My FD2 already 3 years old.

Therefore, I need some help from our sifu in 8GCC to assist me in rectifying this problem. My question are:-
1. Can wheel bearing damage create this humming sound? Is it humming sound really a genuine source of the wheel bearing damage?
2. What will be the cost for the replacement i.e at Honda SC and outside workshop?
3. Where can I buy this bearing and what is the part no?
4. Do I need to change both front side (Left and right wheel bearing)?
5. If better to do this outside Honda SC, where will be the best workshop to do it?
6. Do any of us had this similar problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

the best is to send your car to the SC. let them diagnose whats the problem...

or maybe just tyre problem perhaps... Very Happy

p/s: wheel bearing do sounds like humming thingy....better quick to do the checking...i once experienced wheel bearing kong on my friend's kancil sewa....your car's wheel will stop like we slamming the emergency brake out of the sudden.... very scary....

Hi Takeshi, how old is your tyres?? Did you ever hit any big hole or road side curb before?
If your car still under warranty, of course send back to SC for diagnostic. If not, find some good tyre workshop and seek for their advise.

Do let us know the findings. thanks

I would need advice from all sifu here on this also. Just changed 4 tyres to michelin but still heard quite obvious humming sound after 80 km/h speed and above. most obvious after 120 km/h. so, don't think it is due to my tyres now. i took my car to 2 tyre shops already and checked and they said it is from the wheel bearing. So, i am doubt about this right now. Anyone has experienced and changed the bearing on FD before? Can advise? My FD1 ('06) and clocked around 115,000km now.

I use Yoko ES501, change it last April at QS (Mileage 111K). Now mileage at 130K (IMO, thread may be left around 60-70%)...Of course warranty already expired..I cannot remember if I had hit any big hole pr road side curb..

I have send to SC last week and they only done inspection on the tire only.. They suspect the rear right wheel bearing faulty..

Today, went to my regular tire shop in Kemaman. After checking, they said there was nothing wrong on the tyre or bearing whatsoever..They ask me to go back to honda SC...they suspect it was a gearbox problem???What?. For your info, I follow strictly the replacement interval for transmission lube oil...Last replacement was done at the same SC that I send for inspection last week.

For your info, the humming sound getting louder compare to last week...So irritating...please help me all sifu's...

I have no experience with low noise tyres so when an office mate asked me for advise, I suggested this tyre based on feedback here. He's driving a Volvo S40 and later he commmented that ininitally it was very quiet but after about 30% worn the noise increases quiet bad. I thought it was bearing also but he said his also ok. His case about similar to yours.... so maybe its the tyres?

I guess I have the same humming sound problem, the sound make it worst when I drove the car on new road, so I suspect the problem is due to uneven tire thread.

I have this experience before, once I change tire problem solved. But in your situation better you go back to SC or maybe go to other SC to get the 3rd opinion.

for your info, my inner thread is cupped so I guess tire problem. Need to do the rotation, but since I'm scouting for new wheel so I just wait another week or 2 or lepas raya ....

anyway post your update....

Gearbox?! I don't think so... When I was dealing with this humming sound on my car, one of the workshop also commented might be gearbox issue, but in the end it was not true.

To determine the sound come from front or rear, tyre workshop guy can easily know if they drive your car. Or get a friend to sit behind you to listen whether the sound come from rear or front.

Did you guys experience more severe humming sound or vibration on steering when doing big cornering(eg. those big turn to enter or exit highway) at those speed that you normally will hear the humming sound on straight road? if yes, do you remember left turn or right turn make it more severe??

Here is my experience, my car had humming sound when I was driving at 60~70km/h, if I drive faster, road noise is more louder than the noise. The humming sound is louder when I do big cornering (right turn) at 60+-km/h, I could even feel the vibration from steering. Note: for my case, only driver side can hear the sound, passenger side or rear passenger can hardly notice the noise. SC changed a lot of parts at the right hand side, wheel bearing, bearing hub, etc... at the end, the real root cause is the left hand side wheel bearing. Changed that and sound disappeared.

I also doubt it is gearbox problem.. humming sound likely culprit is either could be tyres or wheel bearing.

Some bros has replaced their wheel bearings.

Keat01, bro thanks for sharing your experience. So i supposed SC changed your front left side wheel bearing and it solved the humming sound right? How much it cost do you know? i think your FD is still under warranty right?

Ya, changed front left wheel bearing and no more humming sound. Please note this is only for my case, unless you willing to buy one new bearing and try on one side to another side to rectify the problem. Before you proceed with this attempt, make sure tyres is not the problem cause.

Yes, it was happened few months back and my car was under warranty, so I did not need to pay for it.
But I ever checked with a Honda stockist in Singapore, the new wheel bearing cost less than SGD50(ard SGD45+), I suppose you could get it below RM150 without installation in Malaysia, of course not SC.
