This happened on an FD1.8 and i m not sure if this issue has been posted here previously.
Open bonnet and look at alternator.
The lowest part of the alternator (partially hidden from view) has a metal bracket attached to it via screws. This bracket then connects to something that looks like a "mini absorber"..sort of a miniature damper/tensioner that maintains belt tension.
That metal bracket's screw snapped by itself, and 1/2 of the screw was trapped inside the bracket, meaning the tensioner is no longer mounted properly and is loose. Alternator was removed, bracket removed from alternator, and the broken screw was removed the bracket by using an electric drill.
But why did the screw snap into 1/2?
The 'mini absorber' thingy (let's call it belt tensioner) has jammed and could no longer compress. This meant, all vibration/shock was transferred around the engine block, alternator area etc and there was no dampening. It became a piece of fixed metal. The bracket next to it was vibrated to death, and therefore, the bracket's screw broke.
Anyway, the tensioner (original part) cost about RM650 and for such a small part, is certainly not cheap. There were no symptoms of the problem, except that the mechanic saw the small 1/2 screw somewhere in the engine bay and suspected something was amiss.
The mechanic (private, not SC), mentioned that many SCs are aware of this but did not mention to customers. On this high mileage FD1.8, even the fan belt pulley's bearing started to make noises, and it was changed as well. An overly tight belt, over a prolonged period, could hv also contributed to the premature bearing failure.
Just want to keep 1.8 owners informed so that you all keep it in mind. |

This sounds serious! Thanks for the warning Albert. Any chance you may have some pictures to point out the affected parts for the not so savvy driver? I don't really know what is the belt tensioner or even the alternator
I'm not surprised if the SC wouldn't point it out or see it as an issue. They wouldn't want to do any unnecessary work especially if it's during the warranty period. |

Apologies, BT....during the repair, I didn't hv my cam handy. So, no pics.
Also, I heard from certain sources that some SCs are aware of the "belt too tight" problem, and if the situation needs it, will change the belt to a very slightly longer one.
Also, that FD has also experienced power steering pump failure, and also leaking from a power steering hose (not the hose, it seems, but a valve thingy at the end of the hose). endless problems!!!! |

According to the owner, there was no sound.
The power steering system leaked, lost pressure and became heavy at certain angles...that's why the car was brought to the workshop. There, the mechanic spotted the problem that I described above.
Of all the new cars that I've been detailing, I have this weird feeling that now is the time for those early FD Civics to start developing problems and most of these problems are very expensive to rectify and should not happen so soon (ie, power steering pump, a/c compressor, manifold gasket etc etc).
If I had to make a rough generalisation, I would say that even the current Wiras seldom had these serious problems when they were much younger many many years ago.
I think the next surprise will the 1st batch of Honda City's CVT gearbox.... could be "times up" already. |
